Not every lock is the same. Depending on the door, the location and the desired security level, different types of locks are available. On this page, Locksmith Lucas gives an overview of the most common lock types we install, replace and repair throughout Flanders.

This way you know exactly which lock best suits your home, office or garage.

1. Cylinder locks (standard cylinders)

Cylinder lock or standard cylinder for doors

The cylinder lock is the most commonly used lock in Belgium. It consists of a metal cylinder in which the key turns to open or lock the door.

There are several variants, depending on the type of door and the desired security level.

Advantages of a standard cylinder:

  • Affordable and easy to replace
  • Compatible with most mortise locks and door hardware
  • ✅ Can be combined with keyed alike systems (one key for multiple doors)

Disadvantages:
A standard cylinder offers limited protection against burglary methods such as lockpicking or cylinder pulling. That’s why we usually recommend upgrading to a security cylinder.

2. Security locks and security cylinders

Security lock with anti-snap protection

A security lock offers extra protection against burglary attempts. It is equipped with hardened steel pins and anti-pull protection, making it much harder to drill or pull out the cylinder.

Some models are also equipped with anti-pick, anti-bump and anti-snap systems that make modern burglary techniques virtually impossible.

A security lock usually comes with a certificate: only with this certificate can an extra key be made, which further increases your security.

Features of security locks:

  • 🛡️ Protection against drilling, pulling and picking
  • 🔒 Often supplied with a security shield or security escutcheon
  • Ideal for front doors and main access doors

3. Multipoint locks (multipoint locking systems)

Multipoint lock with multiple locking points

A multipoint lock closes your door at several points at the same time — often at three, five or even seven points. When you turn the key, several bolts lock into the frame at once.

This makes it extremely difficult for burglars to force the door.

Advantages:

  • 🔐 Very secure locking with a single action
  • 🚪 Increased stability of the door (better closing, less draught)
  • 🔑 Available with cylinder, key or handle operation

Applications:

  • 🏠 Front doors, patio doors and back doors
  • 🏗️ New-build homes or renovated doors

Maintenance:
Multipoint locks are more complex and must be adjusted precisely — a job for an experienced locksmith.

4. Rim locks

Rim lock mounted on door

A rim lock, unlike a mortise lock, is mounted on the door instead of inside it. You can see the lock body on the inside of the door.

This type of lock is often used in older homes or interior doors where no standard lock case is provided.

Advantages:

  • Simple installation
  • Suitable for thin or old doors
  • ✅ Often combinable with an extra deadbolt or cylinder

Disadvantages:
Less aesthetic and generally less secure than built-in locks. For exterior doors, a security cylinder or multipoint lock is usually the better option.

5. Mortise locks

Mortise lock recessed into door

A mortise lock is a mounting type: the lock is recessed into the door itself. Today this is the standard installation method in most homes. The lock case is hidden inside the door; only the handle, key and escutcheon remain visible.

Advantages:

  • Sleek, concealed installation
  • 🔒 High reliability
  • 🔑 Suitable for cylinders, latches and multipoint systems

Applications:
A mortise lock can be used for both interior and exterior doors, depending on the type of cylinder or locking mechanism.

Note: Most interior door locks are mortise locks, but not every mortise lock is an interior door lock. There are also mortise locks specifically designed for exterior doors.

6. Room locks (interior door locks)

Room lock for interior doors

A room lock is an interior door lock mainly used for doors that do not require a high level of security — such as bedrooms or offices. It is usually a simple mortise lock with a latch, optionally with a key or thumb turn.

Advantages:

  • Easy operation
  • Functional and neat appearance
  • 🎨 Compatible with door hardware in different styles

Not suitable for exterior doors, as it offers no real burglary resistance.

Short explanation:
A mortise lock is a mounting method, whereas an interior door lock or room lock is an application. Interior doors almost always use mortise locks.

7. Keyed alike locks (keyed alike cylinders)

Keyed alike locks with the same key

With keyed alike locks, you can open several doors with one and the same key. This is very practical if you have multiple access points, such as front door, back door, garage and gate.

Advantages:

  • 🔑 Only one key needed for multiple doors
  • Less risk of losing or confusing keys
  • 🔒 Can be combined with security cylinders

Applications:

  • 🏠 Homes, apartments, small businesses or B&Bs

Tip:
“Keyed alike” does not mean that every lock is identical — only that they use the same key code. The level of security still depends on the type of cylinder used.

8. Gate locks and window locks

Gate lock and window lock for outdoor use

Gate locks are designed for outdoor use and must withstand moisture, wind and temperature changes. They have a robust mechanism and often a galvanised or hardened finish.

Window locks are used to secure windows and are an important addition to your burglary protection. Many burglaries occur through windows that are not properly secured.

Advantages of window locks:

  • 🪟 Extra locking without affecting the window structure
  • 🔒 Can be combined with child safety locks or window bolts

9. Security escutcheons and door hardware

Security escutcheon for cylinder protection

A security escutcheon is not a lock, but an essential part of a secure locking system. It protects the cylinder against drilling, snapping or pulling.

They are usually made of hardened steel and have no visible screws on the outside.

Why a security escutcheon is important:

  • 🛡️ Protects your cylinder against forced entry
  • ⏱️ Slows down or prevents burglary attempts
  • 🔧 Extends the lifespan of your lock

We recommend always combining a security cylinder with a security escutcheon for maximum protection.

Which lock should you choose?

The right choice depends on:

  • 🚪 The type of door (interior or exterior)
  • 🛡️ The required security level
  • 💰 Your budget
  • Aesthetic preferences
